Change is Good, For once!!
So today I am in a meeting at work. I am the chair of our nursing council for our intensive care unit. The heated discussion this month was working holidays. A few years ago, a previous nursing council decided to design this holiday team list, which included 3 teams. Team A works memorial day, fourth of july and christmas. Team B works labor day, thanksgiving and new years. Team C works holidays that fall on the weekends only, (this team was intended for people who are weekend program and work 12 hours saturday and 12 hours sunday). All other full and part time staff were split between teams a and b.
Ok now let's think about this. Memorial day, labor day and thanksgiving never fall on the weekends. Christmas, New Years and the Fourth fall on weekends once every 6 years. Hmmmmmm so weekend staff should not have to work any major holidays!!!! Good Lord I would love to slap the individual who thought up this plan. How the hell is this fair to the people who work full time, such as I, in addition to being on multiple commities. Last year I worked 12 hours on Thanksgiving and 12 hours on New Years. The hell if I am going to work 12 hours on my holidays this year and let the weekend staff have no holiday commitments. Please give me a break!!! If you don't want to work holidays then work in an office somewhere! Nursing is a 24/7 365 profession! Grow the fuck up people and stop whinning! We all have families we would love to spend some portion of time with on the holidays. Our council decided to get rid of the Team C and force everyone to work holiday coverage this year. Too bad that's life, deal with it!
